After being an island of stability for most of 2008, the Canadian labour market is now softening rapidly. Overall employment declined by a dazzling 129,000 jobs in January, More than three times of market expectations. Note that this drop in employment exceeds any monthly decline during the previous economic downturns of the 1980s and 1990s and brings the amount of job losses for the last three months to 213,000 — the worst performance on record.
